Winter definitely isn’t your skin's best friend. Cold temperatures and harsh winds, combined with the dryness of central heating, often result in sensitive and irritable skin that no amount of your usual moisturizer can soothe.

Even if you actually like this time of the year, your skin doesn’t — and it needs extra TLC to avoid becoming dry and irritable, because your summertime beauty regimen simply won’t cut it. Luckily, there are a few simple things you can do to switch up your skincare routine and enjoy glowing and radiant skin throughout the year.

Tip 1: Use a sheet mask for extra hydration

Tip #3: Rethink your cleanser

Your skin barrier becomes extra fragile during winter, impacting the production of natural oils protecting your skin. It’s not just the cold weather or dry central heating air, but rather the constant switching between the two that causes your skin to become irritated and red.

To give your skin a boost and support the skin barrier, you may want to befriend a richer, more nourishing cleansing oil that won’t strip the skin. If your skin is naturally sensitive and prone to irritation, you should also consider giving it a break from products that contain alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) and retinoids at least until your skin heals.

Tip #4: Apply sunscreen

It may seem silly to wear SPF when it’s so cold outside, and you’ve not seen the sun in days, but it’s one of the biggest mistakes you can make in your winter skincare regimen. UV (ultraviolet) rays can and do penetrate clouds and cause damage to your skin even in winter, so it’s important you don’t stop applying sunscreen as soon as the summer is over.

Choose lightweight and SPF+50 products that won’t clog your pores and compromise your skin’s natural exfoliation process. You can even try using a compact cushion foundation that comes with UVB and UVA protection to make sure your skin is safe throughout the day.

Winter is a challenging season for skin, but with the right kind of care, your skin will stay healthy and smooth no matter the weather.
